Marie, the Apparent Widow

When Marie went looking for her husband, she was told Joe was dead. She was not allowed to keep the farm, the widow's pension Joe had been collecting, or to stay in the Poor House in Delhi. She wandered the area around Honesdale, Pennsylvania for a few years, but without Joe she could not survive in the wilderness. She stayed in the homes or barns of various people in the area for a few years, but eventually returned to her girlhood home in Whitman, Massachusetts. She lived with a sister and worked in a factory until she died in December of 1890.
